dividend

dividend
A portion of a corporation's profits distributed to its shareholders on the basis of the number and type of shares they own. Dividends are not always paid in money, but can be paid in shares, known as a stock dividend. The amount of a dividend is decided by the corporation's board of directors, although state laws may require that there be a minimum level of profits or assets before the dividend can be approved.
